Shogayu Tea (Ginger Tea)

Shogayu tea, or ginger tea, is a traditional Japanese beverage made with fresh ginger. It’s known for its warming and soothing properties, especially during cold weather or when you feel under the weather.

Here’s a simple recipe to make shogayu tea

Ingredients:

  • 1-2 inches of fresh ginger root
  • 2 cups of water
  • 1-2 teaspoons of honey (optional, for sweetness)
  • 1-2 teaspoons of lemon juice (optional, for added flavor)

Instructions:

Prepare the Ginger:

  • Peel the ginger root using a spoon or a peeler.
  • Slice the ginger into thin pieces or grate it finely. The finer the ginger, the stronger the flavor.
  • In a small pot, bring 2 cups of water to a boil.
  • Once the water is boiling, add the sliced or grated ginger.
  • Reduce the heat to low and let it simmer for about 10-15 minutes. The longer it simmers, the stronger the ginger flavour.
  • After simmering, strain the tea into a cup or teapot to remove the ginger pieces.

Add Sweetener and Lemon (Optional):

  • Stir in honey to taste, if desired.
  • Add a splash of lemon juice for a refreshing twist.

Serve:

  • Enjoy your shogayu tea hot.
